“THE ROAD” by Cormac McCarthy
McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize winning post-apocalyptic novel impressed readers with the contrast between the beauty of the writing and the bleakness of the story. Skillfully conveying this emotional story with an economy of words and minimal backstory, McCarthy clearly demonstrates his mastery and confidence over the English language by playfully ignoring/breaking “school’s rules” by not using an apostrophe for the first 60+ pages, and including several real- sounding made-up words.
