The discussion for the book of month November 2008

Most members enjoyed “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, and thought that the structure of the novel (after a precocious and unnecessarily confusing prologue), with Death as the unlikely narrator, worked well for the most part. Written for ‘Young Adults’, Zusak bravely attempts to strike a balance between emotion, education and entertainment by focusing on the intimacy of personal relationships and experiences, with difficult content matter (anti-semitism, genocide, Naziism) as a backdrop.
One member thought the book was superficial, with key relationships portrayed in a manner that seemed far too modern for the time in which the story is set.
