"My Thai Girl and I" by Andrew Hicks
Andrew joined us for this meeting, despite a wired jaw...and was able
to tell us how much he loved writing "My Thai Girl and I".
Most members (all foreigners) liked this book. The diary-style format
was an effective way to allow the content to flow between
descriptions and pictures of Isan village life and family
relationships, the author's views/opinions on a variety of subjects
and the story of a very personal journey in the attempt to build a
new life, at a new stage of life. Emotions were measured and
respectful throughout the book in regard to challenging intercultural
dynamics with newly acquired in-laws and extended family and friends.
Difficult (emotional) and uncomfortable (physical) situations were
portrayed in a humorous and generous manner as the author slowly, but
surely learns to "go with the flow" and live day by day.
It should be mentioned that the one Thai member present shared that
nothing in the book was unusual or surprising, highlighting the
target demographic for "My Thai Girl and I"...foreigners.
Regards,
Terri and Sharda
